History & Architecture
A merchant family builds a townhouse at the edge of the old quarter — oak beams floated downriver, brick fired in the village kiln. The initials above the door are theirs; we left them there.
Between the wars the upper floors become a workshop for bookbinders and gilders. Brass fittings, inlay work and the smell of glue and leather settle into the walls for half a century.
Three years of careful work: lime plaster instead of cement, original timber re-oiled, every hinge rescued or recast. Nothing was modernised that could instead be repaired.
